今日は、Flaunt Magazineのインタビューの内容を少しご紹介しようと思います。
The truth is that Lenny Kravitz almost didn’t come out of the jungle. He was alone there for six months, his company primarily consisting of wild monkeys and parrots. In the afternoons Lenny Kravitz would ride a horse into the fields, which sounds like an image you’d see in an advertisement for artisanal tequila but which is something Lenny Kravitz actually did during this episode of his life, when he was off the grid and existing in-sync with the rhythms of nature on his farm in the remote mountains of Brazil.
“I mean, there were parrots like ones that you see in a store and buy for thousands of dollars,” he says, “the multicolored ones—green, blue, red—flying around like pigeons.”
Kravitz did not want to leave his agrarian enclave. But to own a farm in the remote mountains of Brazil, one must be either a Brazilian farmer or a rockstar, and Lenny Kravitz, falling into the latter category, couldn’t just disappear into the jungle on horseback. He was instead, in time, coaxed off the farm by his management team.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know man, I think I’m just going to be a farmer,’ you know? When I was there, I noticed the presence of God.”
記事の書き出しの部分ですが、前のエントリーにも少し書いたように、実はレニーは、一時期音楽活動をやめることも考えるくらい精神的に追い詰められていて、友達のブラジルの農園で農作業を手伝いながら暮らしていたんですね(ちなみに、レニーはその後その農園を買い取っています)。
でも結局、「自分がやるべきことをまだ全部やっていないのに、ここでやめるわけにはいかない」と思い直して戻る決意をして、それでできたのが"It's Time For A Love Revolution"だったんですよ。
レニーは、よくインタビューで「自分の音楽の才能は神から与えられたものだから、音楽を作るのは自分の使命なんだ」というようなことを言っているんですが、この時も、結局そう考えて、音楽活動を再開したみたいですね。
What do people get wrong about him? I ask Craig Ross, Kravitz's guitarist.
Craig Ross: He's got an incredible sense of humor. I don't know if that always comes across. He's a genuine artist and is completely true to what he does. He should be respected as one of the great musical artists, I think.
Tell me a story about Lenny Kravitz.
Craig Ross: I was in the Bahamas doing a record, and he was in Los Angeles. My 50th birthday was coming up, and he calls me and says, “We have to do this little show, just you and me. Sorry it’s going to be on your birthday, but I’m going to have to fly you here, and you’re going to have to work.” So I meet him and he takes me up to this house where he’s staying, to rehearse. We’re going to get to work, and he says, “Let me show you the house,” and he opens the door to the kitchen and everybody I know, from all over the world, is in that room. He’d been working on it for months. It was the most incredible thing anybody has ever done. That’s the kind of guy he is.
それから、クレイグにも話を聞いているんですが、レニーはクレイグをバハマで作業させておいて、クレイグの50歳の誕生日直前に、「誕生日に申し訳ないんだけど、急に2人だけの小さなライブの仕事が入ったから、今すぐロサンゼルスに来てくれないか」と電話してきたそうです。それで、クレイグがロサンゼルス着いて、リハーサルをするからと、レニーが当時滞在していた家に連れて行かれてキッチンのドアを開けると、そこにみんながいて、誕生日を祝ってくれたそうです(笑)
たぶん、これがその時の写真だと思います(笑)
それで、最初の話に戻りますが、レニーがなぜそこまで精神的に追い詰められたかというと、やっぱり、ニコールとの噂はでっち上げで嘘だったからなんじゃないかと私は思うんですよ。なぜかというと、レニーはリサ・ボネットとの離婚を乗り越えているからです。
日本人には解りにくいかもしれませんが、リサ・ボネットは、当時大人気のドラマに出ていた、大人気女優だったんですね。それが、まだデビューもしていない無名のミュージシャンといきなり付き合いだしたと思ったら、結婚したり子供ができたりで、大騒ぎだったわけですよ。レニーがアメリカで叩かれていたのは、人種的なことだけではなくて、それも大きな原因のひとつだったんです。それに比べたら、ニコールとの騒ぎなんて大したことないですからね……。
迷っていましたが、やっぱりこちらの記事を紹介しておくことにします。
インタビューの中で、ニコールの話をしている部分をいくつか取り上げます。
For example, the New York retro rocker, who turns 40 on May 26, did not cheat on Nicole Kidman. "That was never the fact. It was made up," insists Kravitz. His relationship with Kidman ended last winter because, it was speculated, he had dated other women.
ニコールとの交際が終わったのは、他の女性とデートしていたところをパパラッチされたから、ということになっていますが、レニーは、「それは事実じゃない、ハメられたんだ」と言っています。
"Certain things I can take, I have taken them for years," he says. "But these are just bold-face lies. I try to take the high road, like, okay, I let it go. But after a while you have to stand up for yourself. It makes me look bad and it never happened."
「事実なら受け入れるけど、あきらかな嘘は受け入れられない。なんとかやり過ごそうとしたけど、やっぱり自分自身の為に立ち上がることにした」というようなことも言っています。
News of their relationship was spread through sightings of them around town. MAN ABOUT TOWN Rumors swirled that they were headed down the aisle, especially after Kidman began wearing a diamond ring. Both single parents, they apparently shared family time with their children.
レニーがニコールと一緒に出掛けているところをパパラッチされた写真の中で、ニコールが左手の薬指に大きな宝石が付いた指輪をつけていたものがありますが、あれは、ニコールが自分の指輪をつけて行ったんじゃないかと私は疑っています。それだけじゃなく、おそらくニコールが自分でパパラッチに情報をリークしたんじゃないかと思ってますけど……。
Last month, the German magazine Gala published alleged comments by Kravitz that amounted to an admission that he has a tendency to stray. "I'm a nice, charming guy, who can give a lot of love," the singer supposedly said. "But I'm also complicated, a b--, a diva."
Kravitz swears he never made these remarks. He adds that Gala claims it has lost the tape of its interview with him. "They are just lies, saying I said something I never said," says Kravitz. "My child had to read that. Nicole's children have to read that. She had to see it, I have to see it. We don't really pay attention to that stuff, but the point is that it is just not cool.
それから、「Galaのドイツ版に、言ってもいないことが書かれた」とも言っています。しかも、録音したテープを無くしたと言われたそうですよ……。
そして、その後にとても重要なことが書かれています。レニーは、「自分とニコールの子供達が、こういう話を読んだらどう思うか」ということをとても気にしているんですね。この頃だけじゃなく、今もニコールを責めないでいるのは、ニコールの子供達(当時はトム・クルーズとの子供達、そして現在はキース・アーバンとの子供達)のことを気遣っているからなんじゃないかと思います。
はっきりした証拠はありませんが、そもそもニコールがレニーに近付こうと考えたのは、レニーがペネロペ・クルスと友達だったからなんじゃないかと私は疑ってるんですよね。レニーが未だに本当のことを言わないのは、ペネロペを守ろうとしているのもあるんじゃないかと私は思っています。
私の推測がだいたい当たっているとすれば、ニコールは、レニーの口を塞ごうと必死になってるんじゃないかと思うんですよね……。でも私は、レニーのファンとして、自分のキャリアの為にレニーを潰そうとしているニコールのことは絶対に許せないので、微力ですが、もう少しブログを書いていこうと思います。
